Volunteering at Beechwood

Beechwood School depends on volunteers to enrich the educational experience of its students. Those who give of their time and talents open up opportunities that would not otherwise be available to students.

Volunteers that provide even a small amount of time to our children greatly enhance their educational experience and influence them in many positive ways. Time spent with a positive adult role-model promotes an interest in learning while broadening a student’s outlook.

Volunteers are given training, support, and encouragement for the accomplishment of their volunteer activity.

Reading Buddies

The Reading Buddies program is an excellent opportunity for Beechwood students to interact with positive adult figures outside of their immediate family members and instructors. Reading Buddies are pairs of readers, one student and one adult, who meet for 45 minutes one day a week during the lunch hour to read and discuss a good book. Students are in grades 2 through 4 and range in age from 7 to 9 years.

Study Club

Volunteers provide one-on-one academic assistance after school to students in specific instructional areas. This assistance may take the form of homework help or tutorial assistance in math or language arts.

Teaching Assistants

Volunteers can offer classroom support by working with small groups and mentoring individual students. Participation is in accordance with the needs of the classroom teacher, the schedule of both teacher and volunteer and the comfort level and ability of the volunteer.

Clubs

From cake decorating to rock climbing, clubs meet weekly for 4 weeks in the spring to explore a common interest. Clubs cross grade levels and are selected by the students themselves. Staff members are present to assist volunteers who choose to head up a club sharing a hobby of their own. Volunteers may also choose to assist with a club directed by someone else.

These are just a few of the ways volunteers like you can make a difference in the life of a child. For more information, please contact:

Volunteers in Action

In addition to individual volunteers, Beechwood also receives volunteer support from organizations in the surrounding community. These groups provide volunteers to foster our children’s academic and personal growth.

Stanford University—Henry’s Place

Henry’s Place is an after-school program designed to motivate and excite kids about learning science through fun, hands-on, interactive activities.

Castilleja School—Study Club

Castilleja Middle and High School students volunteer in our after-school tutoring program and help to strengthen the academics of our younger students by assisting with their reading and math skills.

The law firms of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, Gunderson Dettmer, and Latham & Watkins LLP—Reading Buddies

These local businesses have provided many volunteers over the years to the Reading Buddy program. These volunteers commit one hour per week to work on basic reading skills with Beechwood students.
